Disarmament

Belarus actively advocates preventive measures on the WMD. In the First Committee of the General Assembly, Belarus traditionally initiates a resolution on the prohibition of the development and manufacture of new types of weapons of mass destruction and new systems of such weapons. The 2008 resolution, based on the resolution 60/46, will seek to acknowledge the desirability of keeping the matter of prevention of the development and manufacture of new types of the WMD under review and to suggest the Conference on Disarmament as an appropriate body for monitoring the situation and, when necessary, making recommendations on specific negotiations on identified types of such weapons.

The resolution, as expected, will urge Member States to give favourable consideration to the recommendations made by the Conference on Disarmament on this matter. Read more about the historic background and rationale behind the resolution.
